Jessica

Angham Steckelberg

During the sounds of sirens, interceptions and explosions,
during scrolling on the news every day,
Ramadan lay a strange silence over the town.
I was fasting for the first time,
my body, my mind and everything around me felt different.
Trying to find new routines, building my day structure from scratch,
not knowing who to break the fast with yet.
I wish Jessica would stop texting me happy Ramadan.
I wish she would stop asking whether it is too dangerous here now,
I wish she would stop asking me whether I am planning to come back.
I wish she would know without me having to explain
I wish she would just ask me how I was feeling.
I wish she knew anything about the geography of the
Middle East.
